HomeMy WebLinkAbout035-2017RESOLUTION NO. 35-2017 DESIGNATING THE AUSTIN ROOT HOUSE AS A DANVILLE HERITAGE RESOURCE (APN:199-330-013 - ARDAV AN ONSORI) WHEREAS, Ardavan Onsori is the owner of the property identified as 120 West Linda Mesa Avenue; and WHEREAS, on October 29, 2013 the Danville Planning Commission and Heritage Resource Commission jointly approved Development Plan request DEV13-0029 which served to allow the construction of 1,370 +/- square feet of new first floor commercial floor space and the construction of three new second floor residential units totaling 2,940 +/- square feet; and WHEREAS, that approval also allowed for the restoration of the historic Austin Root House; and WHEREAS, the restoration of the Austin Root House has been satisfactorily completed; and WHEREAS, the Danville Heritage Resource Commission held a public hearing on February 13, 2017, and approved Heritage Resource Commission Resolution No. 2017- 01 recommending that the Town Council designate the Austin Root House as a Danville Heritage Resource; and WHEREAS, the property owner Ardavan Onsori has consented to the designation of the Austin Root House as a Danville Heritage Resource; and WHEREAS, Section 32-72 of the Danville Municipal Code (Historic Preservation) establishes criteria for designation of a heritage resource; and WHEREAS, the history of the Austin Root House includes the following: 1. The structure was built in 1917 by Austin Root, son of James Root. Austin Root was a popular local figure, owner of Root's Bar & Restaurant for 22 years, active in the volunteer Fire Department, a Deputy Sheriff, and owned a contracting business. He started the Mt. Diablo Dairy with his father in 1931, which operated for 30 years. 2. The craftsman design is consistent with designs that were popular throughout the country from about 1905 until the early 1920s. 3. The structure was originally located on Hartz Avenue (to the east, on the AutoCare of Danville site), and was moved to its current location in 1950 when Shell Oil bought the property. RESOLVED, that the Danville Town Council designate the Austin Root House located at 120 West Linda Mesa Avenue as a Danville Heritage Resource. APPROVED by the Danville Town Council at a regular meeting held on May 2, 2017, by the following vote: AYES: Arnerich, Blackwell, Morgan, Stepper, Storer NOES: None ABSTAIN: None ABSENT: None APPROVED AS TO FORM: I TOWN ATTORNEY PAGE 2 OF RESOLUTION NO. 35-2017
