SUPPORTING SAINT MARY'S COLLEGE BID
TO HOST A 2012 PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE
WHEREAS, 2013 will mark the 150 anniversary of Saint Mary's College, which began in San
Francisco in 1863, then moved to Oakland and later settled in Moraga, California, in 1928; and
WHEREAS, Saint Mary's will host a series of events to commemorate the College's
Sesquicentennial celebration and demonstrate its commitment to civic engagement; and
WHEREAS, Saint Mary's College has recent experience in hosting a federal debate since it
was the location of a senatorial debate between Barbara Boxer and Carly Fiorina on September
1, 2010; and
WHEREAS, Saint Mary's College plans to submit a bid to host one of the 2012 United States
Presidential debates on the College campus in Moraga, California; and
WHEREAS, the Commission of Presidential Debates host four debates during the general
election season, three for presidential candidates and one for vice - presidential candidates;
and
WHEREAS, in 2008, the presidential debates were held at the University of Missipi in Oxford,
Mississippi, Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, and Hofstra University in
Hempstead, New York; and
WHEREAS, the debates are organized by the Commission on Presidential Debates which has
a series of criteria for site selection; and
WHEREAS, McKeon Pavilion, the Saint Mary's College main gym, generally fits the size and
parameters for becoming an attractive debate hall; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the Town of Danville supports Saint Mary's College bid for the 2012
Presidential debate and urges all its residents to support this effort.
APPROVED by the Danville Town Council at a regular meeting on March 15, 2011, by the
following vote:
