RESOLUTION NO. 113-2009
AUTHORIZING THE TOWN MANAGER TO EXECUTE A MEMORANDUM OF
UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE TOWN OF DANVILLE AND
CENTRAL CONTRA COSTA SANITARY DISTRICT REGARDING A
PHARMACEUTICAL COLLECTION PROGRAM
WHEREAS, in 2007 the common practice of flushing expired or unwanted pharmaceuticals
down a drain or toilet became illegal; and
WHEREAS, one way to reduce the pharmaceutical levels in surface water bodies is
through collection programs and through educating residents and health care professionals
on proper disposal methods; and
WHEREAS, the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District (CCCSD), the Central Contra Costa
Solid Waste Authority (CCCSWA) and the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office have
developed a pharmaceutical collection program to help residents comply with state law;
and
WHEREAS, the pharmaceutical collection program will benefit the community and
environment by providing education, providing a convenient way to properly dispose of
unused or expired pharmaceuticals, and by preventing unused pharmaceuticals from
reaching those intending to abuse them; and
WHEREAS, the Town will work together with the CCCSD and the CCCSW A to provide
comprehensive outreach and education including pamphlets, brochures and advertising;
and
WHEREAS, the CCCSW A, of which Danville is a member agency, will provide a secure
container that will be outfitted with appropriate information and logos; and
WHEREAS, the pharmaceutical collection container will be located in the Danville Police
Department lobby; and
WHEREAS, the CCCSD will contract directly with a vendor who is licensed to transport
and dispose of collected material; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the Danville Town Council hereby authorizes the Town Manager to
execute a Memorandum of Understanding between the Town of Danville and Central
Contra Costa Sanitary District regarding a Pharmaceutical Collection Program.
APPROVED by the Danville Town Council at a regular meeting on November 17, 2009, by
the following vote:
