RESOLUTION NO. 30-2006
SUPPORTING PROPOSITION 81, CALIFORNIA STATE LIBRARY BOND, ON
THE JUNE 6, 2006 BALLOT
WHEREAS, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed into law the California Reading
and Literacy Improvement and Public Library Construction and Renovation Bond Act of
2006; and
WHEREAS, approval by voters of that bond would authorize the State of California to sell
$600 million in bonds to assist local governments in the construction of public libraries;
and
WHEREAS, passage of the bond, which will appear on the June 6, 2006 ballot, will permit
many cities and counties across the state to construct library facilities; and
WHEREAS, the California State Library has identified that at least 579 unfunded library
construction projects, which total $4.4 billion, are in need statewide; and
WHEREAS, use of existing libraries in Contra Costa County continues to grow and expand
as new libraries are added, new services offered, and hours increased; and
WHEREAS, all communities in Contra Costa County benefit whenever a new library is
opened in the County because more resources are available to all County residents; and
WHEREAS, residents of Danville have benefited tremendously over the last decade by
having a new library and the Town Council recognizes the important contribution that
libraries make to literacy, life-long learning, homework assistance to students, and
informational programs for people of all ages; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Town of Danville supports the passage of Proposition 81, the
California Reading and Literacy Improvement and Public Library Construction and
Renovation Bond Act of 2006, and encourages Danville voters to approve this bond act on
June 6, 2006.
