HomeMy WebLinkAbout066-04RESOLUTION NO. 66-2004 SUPPORTING THE LEAGUE OF CALIFORNIA CITIES' RESOLUTION TO SECURE PERMANENT CONSTITUTIONAL PROTECTION OF LOCAL REVENUES WHEREAS, on September 10, 2003, the League of California Cities (League) adopted a resolution to sponsor a statewide ballot initiative, Local taxpayers and Public Safety Protection Act (LOCAL) to secure permanent constitutional protection of local revenues; and WHEREAS, on April 16, 2004, the League filed approximately 1.1 million signatures with the Secretary of State to quality the LOCAL initiative for the November 2004 ballot; and WHEREAS, the Governor of the State of California has offered to secure legislative and voter approval of a proposed alternative November 2004 constitutional amendment with equivalent or better revenue and mandate protection for local agencies; and WHEREAS, on May 12, 2004, the League adopted a resolution reaffirming passage of the LOCAL initiative and accepting and supporting the Governor's proposal for an alternative constitutional amendment; and WHEREAS, the League is urging cities to send letters to their local legislators to support the Governor's constitutional amendment; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, that the Town Council supports the League of California Cities' resolution to secure permanent constitutional protection of local revenues; and be it further RESOLVED, that the Town Council authorizes the Mayor to sign correspondence representing the Town Council's position on this issue.
