PLACING 360, 370 & 376 HARTZ AVENUE ON THE TOWN'S
SURVEY OF HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT RESOURCES
(APN: 208-010-014)
WHEREAS, Yuh Lin & Hui Chen Leou are the owners of the subject property located at
360, 370 & 376 Hartz Avenue; and
WHEREAS, the Danville Heritage Resource Commission recommended placement of 360,
370 & 376 Hartz Avenue on the Town's Survey of Historically Significant Resources at a
publicly noticed meeting on June 10, 2002; and
WHEREAS, Chapter 32-72 of the Danville Municipal Code (Historic Preservation)
establishes standards for review of heritage resources; and
WHEREAS, the history of the building is as follows:
The site is shown as Lot 8 and a portion of lot 7 of the Maderos Addition which was
recorded by Joseph C. and Emma G. Maderos in 1920.
Research indicates that the existing structure was probably built in the mid to late
1920s or early 1930s on a vacant lot near the major intersection of Hartz and
Prospect Avenues, just south of the first fire house.
The structure was constructed in a brick material similar to the established San
Ramon Valley Bank (which later became Bank of America) building next door to the
south (demolished in 1946-47):
The architectural style of the building is a traditional one story brick commercial
storefront for three tenants that has a flat roof with fine brick detailing on the
parapet, recessed entries, and large display windows with kick plates. The original
structure remains relatively unaltered except for minor building code and structural
upgrades that have been accomplished over time.
The historic name for the site is the Markey Building in honor of Pat Markey who
built it.
Pat Markey and Mr. James Fredrickson (died 3/5/46) operated the Danville Barber
Shop in the north end unit of the building and ran newspaper adds in the 1940s
stating "A short wait for a haircut."
In 1935 it was known that the Fredrickson family lived around the corner in a house
on Prospect Avenue where the current Father Nature's restaurant site is located.
A few of the businesses that were located in the building include the Freitas and
Peters General Store (this Freitas is no relation to the Freitas family that lived at 439
Hartz Avenue), a bakery (the oven still remains at the back of the building), and at
one time the U.S. Post Office was located in the largest of the three units of the
building; and
WHEREAS, Yuh Lin & Hui Chen Leou, as property owners, have been notified of this
meeting; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Town Council places 360, 370 & 376 Hartz Avenue on the Town's
Survey of Historically Significant Resources based on the following findings and Historic
Preservation Ordinance, Sections 32-72.3 and 32-72.4 Criteria:
The existing structure on the site is over 50 years old and was built approximately in
the mid to late 1920s or early 1930s.
The structure has retained its historic integrity and has been well maintained. The
building has had minor structural and building code alterations, but most of the
original architectural detailing and materials have been retained.
Criterias a and g: The architectural style of the building reflects a traditional one
story brick commercial storefront for three tenants with a flat roof, fine brick
detailing on the parapet, recessed entries, large display windows and kick plates
and is representative of the time period in which it was built and is the only
remaining historic commercial building of this type still in Danville.
Criteria c: The building is associated with the social and economic growth of the
community in the 1920s and 30s where several of Danville's earliest businesses were
established along the main thoroughfare of town including the U.S. Post Office, a
bakery, and one of the Town's earliest barber shops where residents often gathered
to discuss local issues.
o
Criteria h and i: The structure is located along the main street in the heart of old
town Danville and has become an established visual feature of the community.
