HomeMy WebLinkAbout019-03RESOLUTION NO. 19-2003 PLACING THE HISTORIC BUILDING LOCATED AT 375 HARTZ AVENUE ON THE TOWN'S SURVEY OF HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT RESOURCES (APN: 199-350-016) WHEREAS, John & Sharon de Sousa are the owners of the subject property located at 375 Hartz Avenue; and WHEREAS, the Danville Heritage Resource Commission recommended placement of 375 Hartz Avenue on the Town's Survey of Historically Significant Resources at a publicly noticed meeting on November 4, 2002; and WHEREAS, Chapter 32-72 of the Danville Municipal Code (Historic Preservation) establishes standards for review of heritage resources; and WHEREAS, the history of the building is as follows: The site is shown as Lot 4, Block 5 in the first subdivision plat Map of Danville recorded by John Hartz in 1891. Research indicates that the lot remained vacant through 1910 and the existing structure is the first structure to be built on the site in 1911. The historic name for the site was Xavier's Shoe Store, when John Xavier moved into this building in the late 1920s or early 1930s. From approximately 1915-1916, Tony Cabral had a pool and card room at this site. Both the post office and telephone company were in this building at an earlier tfl2e. 5. It appears that periodic modifications were made to the front faCade. The existing structure on the site was built in a false front commercial style of architecture; and WHEREAS, John & Sharon de Sousa, as property owners, have been notified of this meeting; now, therefore, b6 it RESOLVED, that the Danville Town Council places 375 Hartz Avenue on the Town's Survey of Historically Significant Resources based on the following findings and Historic Preservation Ordinance criteria: 1. The existing structure on the site is over 50 years old and was built in 1911 (approximately 91 years old). The existing building on the site meets the criteria of the following subsections of Section 32-72.4 of the Danville Municipal Code, Historic Preservation Ordinance: (a) and (g): The architecture of the existing building on the site is representative of a frontier false-front storefront commercial building that reflects the time period in which the structure was built in Danville. (c) and (e): The building is associated with persons who made a meaningful contribution to the community because Xavier's Shoe Store supplied local schools with athletic uniforms for many years. (h): The site is Lot 4, Block 5 of the Plat Map of Danville which was recorded by John Hartz in 1891, and was Danville's first subdivision that has evolved over time to become the Town's downtown core. (i): The site is a component of a cluster of buildings which, as a group, form a definable character of this block of the historic downtown core.
