APPROPRIATING FUNDS AND AUTHORIZING THE TOWN MANAGER TO
UNDERTAKE EMERGENCY REPAIRS TO THE DIABLO ROAD OAK TREE
WHEREAS, a periodic review of the health of the large Valley Oak tree on Diablo Road has
been conducted by three arborists; and
WHEREAS, the arborists determined that the Oak tree is suffering from root crown decay
which has weakened the structural integrity of the tree and increased the risk of the tree toppling
over during a major wind event; and
WHEREAS, the recommendation from two of the three arborists is to immediately remove the
Danville Oak to protect the general public; and
WHEREAS, the tree is estimated to be approximately 300 years old, has been designated by the
community as a Danville Heritage Resource and is a special and unique feature of the
community, and whose preservation warrants extraordinary measures; and
WHEREAS, further review and study indicate that a structural frame can be constructed to
provide additional support in the event of root failure, increasing safety and reducing risk
associated with tree failure within the immediate vicinity of the tree; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Town Council hereby appropriates $76,000 in contingency funds from the
2000-2001 Financial Plan, and authorizes the Town Manager to undertake emergency repairs to
