ENDORSING LIBRARY SALES TAX MEASURE L ON THE NOVEMBER 7, 2000
BALLOT
WHEREAS, a succession of budget cuts over the past 20 years has significantly reduced library
services in Contra Costa County; and
WHEREAS, this decrease in funding has reduced the hours and days that neighborhood libraries are
open and resulted in fewer books and materials being purchased for our libraries; and
WHEREAS, libraries are the cultural heart of our communities and vital centers of learning for
youth; and
WHEREAS, the availability of community libraries with adequate hours of operation, collections
and programs desired by our residents is essential to the quality of life in Contra Costa County; and
WHEREAS, eighteen cities in Contra Costa County have previously endorsed improved library
services for our residents and throughout the County; and
WHEREAS, Measure L on the November 7, 2000 ballot will provide critical, stable funding for
each one of Contra Costa County's libraries and will benefit all libraries by providing additional
hours of operation including evening and weekend hours, more books to enhance collections and
greater materials and electronic resources; and
WHEREAS, Measure L will provide funding for the South Region of Contra Costa County, of
which Danville is a part, resulting in better services and resources for Danville residents including
expanded Friday and Saturday hours of operation, Sunday hours of operation and improved children,
teen, adult and volunteer programs; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the Danville Town Council does hereby endorse Measure L, a countywide one-
eighth of a cent sales tax for public libraries, which will provide much needed funds to restore,
maintain and improve library services in ConIra Costa County.
APPROVED by the Danville Town Council at a regular meeting on September 5, 2000, by the
following vote:
