The building was constructed as the Grange Hall No. 85 in 1873. Other uses for the building included a meeting hall for the Danville Rebekah Lodge No. 123 and the Oddfellows. The structure has also been used for a movie theatre, dance hall, San Ramon Valley High gymnasium and a skating rink. The building was renovated many times. First in 1912-13 when the original building was lifted, rotated ninety degrees to become part of a second floor in a larger structure. A large auditorium was added to the rear of the first floor. Remodeling occurred again in 1948, 1976, 1983 and in 1990. Significant pieces of the original Grange Hall are in the upstairs of the building where the Art gallery currently resides. WHEREAS, the Danville Town Council, as the property owner, supports the Heritage Resource designation; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, that the Danville Town Council supports designating the Village Theatre as a Danville Heritage Resource based on the following findings: The building retains its historic integrity in that it continues to serve as a meeting place and social center for the Town of Danville.
