URGING CALTRANS TO PERFORM A FEASIBILITY STUDY ON THE
CONSTRUCTION OF A FOURTH BORE EXPANDING THE CALDECOTT
TUNNEL
WHEREAS, since a third bore was added to the Caldecott Tunnel in 1964, Contra Costa
County's population has more than doubled, with over 150,000 vehicles passing through the
runnel daily; and
WHEREAS, the three bore tunnel, with the middle bore alternating directions, is significantly
inadequate for the traffic needs of the area; and
WHEREAS, the current design has resulted in an unacceptable level of congestion in both
directions requiring immediate attention and resolution; and
WHEREAS, Senator Rainey, Assemblyman Torlakson, Assemblywoman Leach and Senator
Kopp have formally requested Caltrans to prepare a feasibility study on the construction of a
fourth bore; and
WHEREAS, the aforementioned elected officials are therefore urging the Town of Danville to
pass a resolution in support of expanding the Caldecott Tunnel and forwarding this resolution
to Caltrans and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC); now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Town of Danville urges Caltrans to undertake a feasibility study on the
construction of a fourth bore expanding the Caldecott Tunnel,
APPROVED by the Danville Town Council at a regular meeting on August 4, 1998, by the
following vote:
